Birds and Bees Blues

A cover of the great track vincentL uploaded a couple of days ago. I love this song; the lyrics, the chord progression and the melody absolutely caught me.

The arrangement is, for the most part, the same. This is honestly a direct cover, and vincentL asked me to upload it when I told him I was planning to record it. Thanks, man. I've got a pair of shakers running under the chord progression, and that's basically my only contribution. Oh, and I do whistle for a few bars.

This isn't recorded as best as I could, because I'm a little stretched for time. Maybe when I'm free again (this weekend maybe) I will fix the track up, but that's about it till then.

Chameleon

My take on the classic by Herbie Hancock. The bassline is played by a my guitar, with the DI taken down an octave and two mike tracks raised a third and a fifth respectively. There is a lead line and a (what I like to call pornstar edition) guitar track to serve as rhythm. The keys are done by a friend on a Roland Juno-106.

Rough mix with lots of mistakes.

Cherry Jam

I guess this falls under that old genre, ambient-techno-drums-and-bass-with-crazy-guitars-and-a-rapper. I know it's cliched, but what can I do.

The mix is basically a drumbeat and bassline composed in Fruity Loops, with a rhythm guitar and lead. During the chorus, there are samples from a rap song that my friend was working on.

The guitar is distorted to an amount I've never used before, but it was incredibly fun.

This is a ROUGH mix.

Cold Downstairs

This is a song called Cold Downstairs.

I spent more time mastering this than I did writing it, so I'm quite proud of the texture and the overall sound of the track.

Enjoy.

Elephant Juice w/ PDoll

A collab with PorcelainDoll.

Did you ever mouth "elephant juice" across the classroom when you were little?

I wrote and played the guitars, and the result is her magic. The lyrics (as written by PorcelainDoll) are as follows:

And it comes as a surprise,
That you think I'm worth your time,
I'm nothing special,
I'm nothing good.
Oh look at what you've turned me into,
I never thought someone like you ever could.

Finding castles in the sky,
And oceans in your eyes,
What have you done boy,
What have you done?
Just look what you've turned me into,
Now I'm all soft and elephant juice.

And I know we're not in love...
But you know this elephant juice,
Kinda tastes good.

Doll, it's been a pleasure.

Fight the Break of Dawn

The epic four-chord one-hit-wonder 90's-epitome-acoustic hyphenated-described song. You'll recognize it straight away, if the title didn't already give it away.

Straight jam--vocal and guitar line was recorded live together, with an additional take for the harmonies.

Hathor

Old track that I never uploaded for some reason. The mix, listening to it now, needs a lot of work and unfortunately I'm now a Mac user and can't use FL without going through pretty major pains that I don't think are worth it.

It's a grungy, underground electronica track that I wrote early last summer--I'm proudest of the percussion, even if it is extremely repetitive.

Let me know what you think.

I Like The Rains (collab)

Collaborative lyrics between Wisdom (initial surge of creativity), alittlepaperdoll and Blueyes (structure)and myself.

I apologize for the relatively poor recording quality, but it's the best I'm going to get given the equipment I have available here.

The song isn't finished--one day I'll record this properly with better equipment, and that day I'll add a chorus I have in my head.

Enjoy.

Keds And Tube Socks w/TLS

I approached TLS with this for his voice, which is featured towards the end of this track. It's a slightly different approach to a song I assume most of you will recognize, and it's how I always play it. There are a few sloppy points that hopefully aren't too audible---this was mainly just something to do when I taking a break from studying that 'grew'.

Thanks again, Tim, for putting up with my dodgy versioning scheme and singing for this on such short notice. We gotta do this again.

Major Turnaround

This is a happy jam track that I sat down today and just banged out in the three takes that you hear. The lead is a little sloppy, but I like the groove of the track, and this isn't anything extraordinary. There's potential for this to develop into a full-blown instrumental, but for now this is just something for me to take my mind off my exams for a half hour.

The bass sounds strange because it's actually my acoustic guitar pitch-shifted. My roommate's acoustic bass needs a bit of work before it is rightly playable.

Overdub

It's a bluesy guitar solo over a rhythm track--no vocals or any terribly fancy effects.

A completely improvised-on-the-spot recording with a friend who is a genius sound engineer who I hadn't jammed with in over a year. Two layers in two takes. We recorded in a basement in his house--considering the location and the equipment we used, I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

Each layer is actually three tracks--I play a semi-acoustic here that was miked at the headstock and by the bridge, as well as the sound from direct-input. There is some reverb on the tracks as well as a overdrive filter applied to the lead layer.

Played on a Gretsch G6040MCSS Synchromatic Cutaway with two SM57's mixed with Fruity Loops.

Enjoy.

Plus Haute

It has been a long time since I have had the chance to just record a free-form track. I miss having the free time to do this whenever I wanted.

"Plus Haute" is French for "higher". It's a completely improvised track, recorded in four takes, one for each instrument. It features both rhythm and lead guitars, and shakers and a tambourine played as percussion. The lead is sloppy, and maybe if I had more time I would have re-done it, but I love the improvisational nature of the track and may never change this.

I have no plans to have vocals or any extra instruments on this.

Pythonic

My first experiment with FL Studio. I'd like to thank MindsAtPlay who was there guiding me through the process every step of the way and handing out incredible advice. It's very easy to say that without his help I wouldn't have this track. We gotta make more music together, buddy.

The track started off as just a simple bass groove over the simplest of drum tracks. With a little experimentation, luck and MAP, it evolved into a track worth finishing. I'm quite pleased with the outcome--it's a hu-u-uge step in another direction for me, and as of 10 days ago I laughed at this kind of music. Nevertheless, it was extremely fun.

Expect to see more.

Sphinx feat. MindsAtPlay

I've spent a lot of time on this guy--it's probably one of the most complex pieces I've done so far. FL Studio tells me that at it's peak, there are over 35 simultaneous voices. My computer got pretty hammered--the 30 or 40 plugins active at the same time didn't help either.

My thank to MindsAtPlay for the thumping beat that the piece builds up to, and the awesome sampling. Oh, and the invaluable advice every step of the way.

The Ninja Song

A not-to-be-taken seriously song about, quite obviously, Ninjas. This song is part of the ongoing saga of Pirates vs. Ninjas, and so follows "The Pirate Song" that I posted previously. While I am a pirate, it's only fair to the Ninja community to write them a song.

Dedicated to Hattori Hanzo, the greatest Ninja ever (not the fool in Kill Bill).

Enjoy.

(The above is taken from the lyrics, originally at http://forum.bandamp.com/Lyrics_Review/51907.html)

There's some glaring issues in this song, but it's mainly meant to be a demo. When I get access to some better equipment, I may repost. For the moment though, I'm leaving it the way it is.

[edit] Damn, I didn't realize how quiet it is. Oh well.

What You Want

My take on a great track from The John Butler Trio. At some point in time I'd like to add rhythm guitar to this, and maybe a harp solo over the second bridge. The frustration of finding someone to sing for me on my schedule is beginning to get to me, so this is just another one of a long line of tracks that I'll be putting my vocals on.
